The Avengers!!!

It’s a SMASH! Marvel Studios’ latest film, The Avengers, broke the record for the biggest opening weekend in movie history, with an estimated earning of $200.3 million. Movie fans and comic book fans alike are rushing to theaters everywhere to see the highly anticipated superhero flick. The record breaking film is directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth and Clark Gregg. The film focuses around a team of superheroes that need to work together and fight to save Earth from the evil brother of Thor, Loki, and his army. Can the assembly of the Avengers be enough to save an entire planet, or will Loki and his army get what they wish for?

To say that this film was awesome is a complete understatement. The Avengers is a fast paced, action packed thrill that will have audiences everywhere not only raving about it but seeing it again and again.

The acting in the film is phenomenal. Robert Downey Jr. is absolutely brilliant as Tony Stark. The quick wit, sarcastic funny man is one of the best characters Marvel put to the screen. The best part about The Avengers is the mishmash assembly of characters. Chris Evans who portrays Captain America is hilarious as the righteous, self-sacrificing superhero that was frozen in time over 70 years ago and is brought into 2012 to fight crime and save Earth. It’s comedic that he doesn’t understand most of today’s world since he’s been unconscious for nearly a century. At one point, Nick Fury (portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson) mentions Loki’s army and refers to them as ‘flying monkeys’ and naturally Thor (portrayed by Chris Hemsworth) has no idea what that means since he is from a completely different realm, but Captain America exclaims, “I get it! I understand that reference!” Which was clever writing, since The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939 and Captain America was frozen sometime in the 1940's. Chris Hemsworth is great at playing the naïve, burly Thor who is literally from a different world. His thick accent and his dramatic reactions are comical and quite believable. Scarlett Johansson is the sexy Black Widow who bats her eyelashes to get what she wants. Her character is more serious and more business. She has quite a few bad ass fighting scenes and holds her own in a team compiled of all men. Jeremy Renner portrays Hawkeye, which is an interesting character, and has some great scenes with shooting his arrows, but he isn’t in the film as much as the other heroes. It would’ve been nice to see his character interact a little bit more with the other heroes but he delivered a fine performance. Last, but certainly not least, Mark Ruffalo portrays The Hulk. People have been stating that his character stole the show. When he portrays Bruce Banner, he is sweet, quiet and brilliant but to see this small, regular average Joe type guy turn into a huge green beast is awe-inspiring. When he is The Hulk, he actually looks like himself. The CGI is great, and he has some great fighting scenes and comical scenes built in as well. Every actor in this film is worth mentioning. Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg and Tom Hiddleston are all impressive and essential in this dynamic, blockbuster hit.
The story of The Avengers is at times heartbreaking and obviously filled with vengeance. To see the crime fighting superheroes assemble to attempt to save Earth is breathtaking and makes any audience member feel as though an instant classic film is upon them. Director Joss Whedon did a fantastic job balancing the ensemble cast and showcasing the perfect moments and developing the juxtaposition of hodgepodge characters in an incredible superhero film that will now go down in history.

The Avengers is highly recommended for comic book fans, movie fans, and people that love films that are filled with all the great ingredients to make up a timeless, epic superhero flick. The Avengers exhibits courage, wit, comedy and the constant thought that anything is possible.
