In less than 3 months, 2013 will be over and awards season will be in full swing starting Sunday, January 12, 2014 with the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards, then just a few days later on January 18, 2014 the 20th annual SAG Awards and ending the season on Sunday March 2, 2014 with the highly anticipated 86th annual Academy Awards. Now is the crucial time for actors, filmmakers and everyone associated with the industry to get their films shown before the deadline is up, which is most likely the end of the year. Although only a few films mentioned in this list have a possibility of being nominated for the prestigious awards, I wanted to choose films that most people would enjoy and are excited to see. The list is starting with films from about August til December and is packed with different genres such as action, drama, fantasy, and sci-fi. Check out the list and let me know if you have seen these films or share what you recommend me to see!
Lee Daniel's The Butler
Lee Daniel’s The Butler is a historical drama loosely inspired by the life of Eugene Allen.Forest Whitaker portrays Cecil Gaines, an African American who witnesses prominent events throughout his 34 years working in the White House as a butler to 8 American Presidents. The film also stars Oprah Winfrey,John Cusack, and Cuba Gooding Jr. Critics and audiences alike are raving about this heartfelt, emotional drama and Oscar buzz is already starting with Winfrey and Whitaker for possible nods.

Don Jon
Don Jon is written, directed, and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the title role. Gordon-Levitt portrays a Jersey boy who is highly devoted to family, friends and church. Don Jon meets Barbara portrayed by Scarlett Johannson who has an unrealistic expectation about guys and love because of her unhealthy obsession with romantic comedies, while Don is the same way but with his addiction to porn. Porn and rom-coms although completely different genres in the movie industry, do create both for men and women, unrealistic desires that leave the audience more particularly with rom-coms, feeling hopeful and confident that they’ll meet their Prince Charming and live happily ever after. Unfortunately, that’s not how life is, and rom-coms only show about an hour and a half of these people’s lives. Don Jon is getting rave reviews especially for being a very out of the box type of film and raising the bar for writers and filmmakers alike. The film also stars Tony Danza and Julianne Moore.
Reasons to see it: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is really branching out and showcasing his creative artistic side by becoming a triple threat with his writing, directing and acting. The story is fresh and unlike any other and Tony Danza plays his father, that’s reason enough!

Gravity
Gravity is a sci-fi thriller starring Academy Award winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Bullock portrays Ryan Stone, a medical engineer on her first mission to space, and Clooney portrays a veteran astronaut, Matt Kowalsky on his last mission to space before retiring. But on their mission, plans go awry, the shuttle is destroyed and both Stone and Kowalsky are left floating adrift into space. Sounds like an astronaut’s worst nightmare. The entire film is set in space, where there is obviously no gravity, hence the title. Early Oscar buzz is starting for Bullock and Clooney as well in this gripping drama.

The Counselor
The Counselor stars Michael Fassbender as a lawyer who discovers that he is in over his head when he becomes mixed up in drug trafficking. The film is already getting a lot of buzz and it hasn’t even come out yet! The release date is this weekend, October 25, 2013. The film also stars Penelope Cruz,Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, and Brad Pitt.
Reasons to see: The cast is definitely reason enough, and the story line sounds like a thrilling crime drama at its best!

Captain Philips
Captain Phillips is based off a true story about an American Cargo ship that was hijacked by a crew of Somali pirates in April of 2009. The film stars two-time Academy Award winnerTom Hanks as the title role and Barkhad Abdias Muse, Phillips’ captor. Critics and audiences are raving about the direction, screenplay, cinematography, and the performances of Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi in Captain Phillips. Could this be Hanks’ big comeback since his captivating Cast Awayperformance?

The Wolf of Wall Street
The Wolf of Wall Street another film based off a true story is directed by Academy Award winning director Martin Scorsese and starsLeonardo DiCaprio. Jordan Belfort, portrayed by DiCaprio is a Long Island stockbroker who refused to cooperate in a massive security fraud case in the 1990's that involved corruption on Wall Street, the corporate banking world, and the mob. The film is set for a November 15, 2013 release date and also stars Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, andJon Favreau.
Reasons to see it: This will be Scorsese and DiCaprio’s 5th film together, the dynamic duo have worked in exceptional films that have been recognized by the Academy (i.e. Gangs of New York, The Departed, and The Aviator).

Thor: The Dark World
Thor: The Dark World is a sequel from the 2011 blockbuster hit, Thor, and focuses on an evil enemy that comes into Thor’s life and will force him to reunite with his love Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and sacrifice everything he has in order to save the world. Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as the Brawny God of Asgard, and Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and Stellan Skarsgard are back for the second film as well. The film opens in theaters Novemeber 8, 2013.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is also a sequel, from the 2012 film The Hunger Games. The movie is supposed to pick up where the previous film left off, which would be Peeta and Katniss returning home after their victorious win from the 74th Hunger Games. But, the President decides to throw a 75th Annual Hunger Games which could change everything forever. Academy Award winnerJennifer Lawrence reprises her role along withJosh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. Looks like the Hemsworth brothers like their trilogies! Check this film out November 22, 2013.

Ender's Game
Ender’s Game is a film centered on a brilliant young man, Ender (portrayed by Asa Butterfield) who is sent into space to learn how to fight and destroy aliens when they come to Earth. Unfortunately, seven years prior, an alien invasion occurred and Earth was ravaged by the event. People band themselves together to attempt to save the planet and each other. This thrilling sci-fi adventure opens in theaters Novemeber 1, 2013 and stars Harrison Ford,Abigail Breslin and Hailee Steinfeld.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is another sequel added to this list. The previous film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was a prequel to director Peter Jackson’s trilogy ofLord of the Rings. Jackson is back again for another fantasy film filled with a long quest. This time Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and the Dwarves have to continue their journey to get their gold back from Smaug, the dragon. Martin Freeman reprises his role as Bilbo and Ian Mckellen as Gandalf. A nice familiar face, Orlando Bloom, comes back for more excitement as Legolas.
Reasons to see it: Fans of the previous films will have to see it, since this is one of the last films in this series. Beautiful cinematography, action, and entertainment is expected out of this fantasy flick which opens in theaters December 13, 2013

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues
Bonus film: Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues although this is yet another sequel, this is a highly anticipated film ever since the 2004 comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy hit the big screen over nine years ago. In the sequel, newsman Ron Burgundy returns to take New York's first 24-hour news channel by storm. The channel 4 news team is back with Brian, Brick, Champ and of course Ron, and all portrayed by the original actorsPaul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner andWill Ferrell. The film is coming to theaters December 20, 2013.
Reasons to see it: What better way to start off the holidays with a little comedy from a familiar source? If it’s anything like the original it will be hysterical, ridiculous and fun. Other famous actors are slated to appear such as Nicole Kidman, Harrison Ford, Jim Carey and Kristen Wiig.
