'Captain Phillips' is the year's best thriller

The pulse pounding biographical drama, Captain Phillips will have audiences everywhere at the edge of their seat. The film is based off a true story of the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.Captain Phillips is directed by Paul Greengrass and stars two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks in the title role. The film begins with Captain Richard Phillips setting sail on a trip he’ll never forget.

Tom Hanks is mesmerizing in Captain Phillips. His emotions conveyed throughout the entire film are nothing short of incredible. His realistic approach to this character is beyond sincere, and it’s quite shocking that he was snubbed this year from the 2014 Academy Awards. Some parts are so intense; it’s terrifying to think this really occurred. Hanks portrays a wise Captain that will do whatever he can for his crew and his ship. When the cargo ship gets hijacked it’s up to Captain Phillips to remain as calm as he can and attempt to outsmart these underprivileged pirates. He is vulnerable and innocent and delivers one of his finest performances in recent years. Another notable performance was Barkhad Abdiwho plays, Muse, the Somali pirate in charge of taking Captain Phillips hostage, and causing havoc on the cargo ship. Abdi’s first ever film, garnered him a Golden Globe nomination and an Oscar nomination. He portrays Muse as this intimidating, foolish pirate that is desperate to make money, and will stop at nothing to attain his goal. His presence on screen is powerful, and at times so alarming audiences will be tensed throughout most of the film, due to his chilling performance.Captain Phillips is a film, that almost as soon as it begins the action kicks in. It’s a thrilling adventure story about one man’s cargo ship that gets hijacked by Somali pirates in the year 2009 and the amazing skills he possesses in an attempt to survive this terrifying ordeal.

In conclusion, Captain Phillips is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys Tom Hanks or director Paul Greengrass’ films, also to anyone who enjoys a film packed with extraordinary talent retelling a heart racing story about one man’s struggle to face the harsh reality of where his ship has sailed, and the constant desire to survive this harrowing nightmare.
