Director James Cameron recently stated in an interview, that he wants to turn Avatar into a novel, something he wanted to do during post-production but couldn't because of time constraints. He also said that he won't start writing on the scripts for Avatar 2 and 3 until the deal with 20th Century Fox are locked in. He wants to try and film both films back-to-back.
