No Strings Attached!!!

The romantic comedy, 'No Strings Attached' is directed by Ivan Reitman and stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher as Emma and Adam, two friends from the past that their paths cross more than once in the last few years. Can a guy and a girl be friends with benefits? Or will it end in only two ways, disaster or ever lasting love?

'No Strings Attached' is a modern day 'When Harry Met Sally.' It has Emma(Portman) and Adam(Kutcher) meet at a camp when they are really young, and don't see each other again for another 5 years at a frat party. Then they don't see each other again for another year later, which is very similar to the Billy Crystal/Meg Ryan classic in which they see each other only a few times in years and then they become best friends. In 'No Strings Attached' Emma and Adam don't really become friends, they sleep with each other abnormally fast and then agree to keep their 'friendship' strictly physical. There are certain rules that each other have to abide by and if one person feels something more, then they split. It sounds stupid and impossible, which if you remember the question that is constantly repeated in 'When Harry Met Sally' is can a guy and a girl just be platonic friends? They of course change their answer throughout the course of the film. In the present day film, I believe the audience can see that it's quite difficult for a guy and a girl be platonic without any kind of feelings going on.

The acting was great, Portman is sweet and pleasant and makes every girl yearn to be more like her. Kutcher is a little more dramatic and sensitive than his other roles and makes every girl want him for a boyfriend. Again, it's a film that always has the guy chasing after the girl and the girl is this new age character that 'doesn't want to be tied down.' Really? I wish they would switch the roles in these ROM-coms because maybe then they would be slightly more realistic, and women today won't hope and pray that some guy is going to chase them down somewhere dramatically and romantically and then sob to them about how much they need them in their life.

Another similarity between this film and 'When Harry Met Sally' is that Adam and Emma's best friends get together just like how Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kurby get together in the older film.

I enjoyed this film, but it wasn't as funny as I would've thought it would be. I mainly saw it because I adore Natalie Portman and it's a film genre she hasn't really done before.  I highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys Natalie Portman or Ashton Kutcher(although Kutcher's character is quite pathetic and no where near as funny as any other character he has ever portrayed). Also, to anyone who enjoys ROM-coms. It's a nice film to just sit, relax with your loved one or your girlfriends and not have to think too much. If you have seen it please share your thoughts and opinions without giving too much away. And if you have never seen 'When Harry Met Sally' GO RENT IT!!!
