McAdams portrays Inez, a snobby, greedy, selfish newly engaged-to Gil-woman who pushes Gil to stop fantasizing about the past and forget the novel. But, one night at midnight, Gil’s life begins to change for the better and he starts to realize this life may not be what he really wants. Can Gil put his second thoughts aside and stay a movie producer in California or will Paris influence him to stick to his novel and view life differently?
‘Midnight in Paris ’ was a beautiful, clever film that will enhance anyone’s imagination. The film takes place in Paris , France and newly engaged couple Gil and Inez are complete opposites. She is high maintenance and irritating and he is insightful and laid back. The acting is impressive. Owen Wilson takes on a more dramatic role then his usual comedic roles, and truly stands out as an inspiring serious actor. Although his character doesn’t experience that many different levels, acting wise, he still delivered a fine performance. Rachel McAdams portrays the snobby fiancée perfectly, but unfortunately it’s rather annoying and tired. Marion Cotillard is beautiful and elegant. She has such a remarkable presence on screen it is beyond captivating. Her performance was magnificent and should be acknowledged.
The storyline for this film is witty. Woody Allen entices his audience with the thought that when this certain clock in Paris strikes twelve, Gil is taken back to the 1920’s in Paris. There Gil meets his idols, such as Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald (portrayed by Tom Hiddleston and Alison Pill), Ernest Hemingway (Corey Stoll), Pablo Picasso (Marcial Di Fonzo Bo), and Gertrude Stein (Academy Award Winner Kathy Bates). Although Gil doesn’t travel back in time in a DeLorean he is taken back in time by car and each night things get more and more interesting. With all this inspiration and admiration for the time period, Gil finishes his novel and now has to confront a ton of different dilemmas that arise.
This film is engulfed with beauty, culture, and romance. It is definitely a must see for anyone who enjoys artsy, well written, fascinating plots with charismatic characters that drive the story through an original piece of art.
